The Right Thing

It seems that sometimes life can sometimes be filled with contradictions. Example: Earlier today I did what can only be described as "the right thing". Most times in doing "the right thing" you would feel good about what you have done. You would feel proud or at the least content in the fact of knowing that what you did was in the end "the right thing". But, I felt none of these things. I felt terrible.

I can't tell you what I had to do today. Although, I can assure you that it hurt several people and very well may have cost me a good friend. So how can this be "the right thing"? This seems like a contradiction.

Aristotle’s law of non-contradiction states that “One cannot say of something that it is and that it is not in the same respect and at the same time.” So how is this possible? Why do I feel bad for doing the right thing? I believe that while this situation seems to be contradictory, it is actually not at all.

All of the things that we do in life have consequences. They may be good or bad, big or small. But, there are always consequences. Usually when you do a good thing there are good consequences. The same goes for bad things. You do a bad thing most times there are bad consequences. Every so often though these things can get reversed. This is is what happened to me. I did what was the right thing and people got hurt. That is what I felt so horrible about. Not the fact that did the right thing but, the consequences that this thing had on the people that I care for. I take solace in doing the right thing. At the same time I grieve over the pain that I have caused. So there is no contradiction here. Only mixed emotions.

In conclusion, I give this advice. Always do what you feel is right. Don't be afraid to ask advice from some one older and wiser than yourself. And pray. Pray that you always do god's will. It may be hard at the time. But, look into the future. You will see that if you do what is right, at some point there will be good consequences.

The last paragraph is so true. I've found the same. And also I remember that we can please everyone and that in the end the only one who will matter is god. So if we do what's pleasing, following his word, then we're set. Good one trace!

Ok Trace. When you said 'deep', you really meant deep. I kinda know how you feel, since I've been in a similar situation myself. But in the end, you will get through it, because you will always be blessed for doing the right thing. Wow, my goofy little cousin is growing up. I'm so proud!!!

The people that you say that you have hurt need to know why you did what you did. For one, this will eliminate any assumptions of any ill will. Second, doing the "right thing" is not always obvious. If in fact you have done what you believe is to be right in the eyes of GOD ALMIGHTY (not by man's opinion), then those that you have "hurt" will eventually realize that they should not have put themselves in that position anyway. They are the ones who have hurt themselves. Chin up my friend, walk in honor.
